The Invisible Machine

The Internet is not a cloud. It is the largest, most complex, and most fragile machine humanity has ever built. It relies on millions of miles of optical fiber lying on the ocean floor, fragile peering agreements negotiated between corporate rivals, and protocols designed fifty years ago by academics.

Our research aims to demystify this infrastructure. We catalog the protocols (Layer 3/4), map the physical topologies (Layer 1/2), and analyze the governance bodies (ICANN, IETF) that keep the machine running.
